We have four of our own parks within the Village in Burns Harbor. One park is equipped with playground equipment for smaller children. Others are equipped with benches for relaxation and open space for play and for kids to practice sports. Park space can be reserved for free by residents for family picnics, parties, weddings and events.
For a small fee, residents can rent their own raised bed garden plot. Grow your own vegetables! We provide the water, raised bed, and gardening soil – you do the rest. If you prefer, you may garden in your yard and even have your own clothesline.
We have an active Property Owners Association, which hosts a variety of parties throughout the year. These include: 4th of July Kids Parade (the smallest parade in the county), 4th of July Party with food and fireworks, Halloween party, Christmas Party and Chili cook-off with awards for best decorated home and free horse drawn carriage rides.
Get together with other Villagers. In addition to our annual parties, there’s opportunity for other events. We have two new monthly activities open to our residents: 2nd Sunday Suppers and 4th Friday Fun Nights. Other events include Earth Day Village Clean Up, a beginning gardener’s workshop, ‘Art and Canvas’ painting classes, Village Kids Summer Safety Day, and Outdoor Movie Nights. New items are being added to our calendar, so join the fun!
Many subdivisions these days are being built without street lights. The streets of the Village are lit with decorative 1920’s style street lights so you can stroll, jog, bicycle or walk your dog after dark and still see.
We have street trees. Although many of the trees are small now, in the future the roads will be tree lined and shaded. Street trees help to define the street and protect pedestrians on the sidewalk from automobiles. In addition their shade helps lower cooling costs plus they help control storm water runoff and clean the air to help us meet our goal as a “green” community.
Our New Urbanist design and zoning are great for flexible live/work opportunities. Homeowners may operate select small businesses from their homes. In addition, we allow subletting a portion of your house or garage. These units are sometimes placed over a garage or in a connected section of the main structure to create a ‘mother-in-law’ apartment or a small rental for additional income.
Our community has a very active Parks Department with swimming, picnic shelters, competitive events and numerous activities for both children and adults. The town also provides curbside recycling, city sewers, road snow removal along with outstanding police and fire protection. Check out the Burns Harbor website to read more about the exciting redevelopment plans that are in the works, including a new outdoor marketplace.
